ForoneofEmerson’smostfundamentalandfrequentlyrecurringideasisthatofa“greatnatureinwhichwerestastheearthliesinthesoftarmsoftheatmosphere,”an“Over-Soul,withinwhicheveryman’sparticularbeingiscontainedandmadeonewithallother,”which“evermoretendstopassintoourthoughtandhandandbecomewisdomandvirtueandpowerandbeauty.”Thisistheincentive—thesublimeincentiveofapproachingtheperfectionwhichisoursbynatureandbydivineintention—thatEmersonholdsoutwhenheasksustosubmitustoourselvesandtoallinstructiveinfluences.Nature,whichhesays“islovedbywhatisbestinus,”isallaboutus,invitingourperceptionofitsremotestandmostcosmicprinciplesbysurroundinguswithitssimplermanifestations.“Amandoesnottiehisshoewithoutrecognizinglawswhichbindthefarthestregionsofnature.”Thusman“carriestheworldinhishead.”Whetherhebeagreatscientist,provingbyhisdiscoveryofasweepingphysicallawthathehassomesuchconstructivesenseasthatwhichguidestheuniverse,orwhetherhebeapoetbeholdingtreesas“imperfectmen,”who“seemtobemoantheirimprisonment,rootedintheground,”heisbeingbroughtintohisownbyperceiving“thevirtueandpungencyoftheinfluenceonthemindofmaterialobjects,whetherinorganicororganized.”Rangingovertimeandspacewithastonishingrapidityandbindingnamesandthingstogetherthatnoordinaryvisioncouldconnect,EmersoncallsthePastalsotowitnesstheneedofself-relianceandasteadfastobediencetointuition.Theneedofsuchindependence,hethought,wasparticularlygreatforthestudent,whosoeasilybecomesoverawedbythegreatnamesofthePastandreads“tobelieveandtakeforgranted.”Thisshouldnotbe,norcanitbeifwerememberwhatweare.Whenwesincerelyfind,therefore,thatwecannotagreewiththePast,then,saysEmerson,wemustbreakwithit,nomatterhowgreattheprestigeofitsmessengers.ButoftenthePastdoesnotdisappointus;oftenitassistsusinourquesttobecomeourhighestselves.ForinthePasttherehavebeenmanymenofgenius;and,inasmuchasthemanofgeniushascomenearertobeingcontinuallyconsciousofhisrelationtotheOver-Soul,itfollowsthatthegeniusisactuallymoreourselvesthanweare.Soweoftenhavetofallbackuponmoregiftedsoulstointerpretforuswhatwemeanbutcannotsay.Anysupremetriumphofexpression,therefore,shouldarouseinusnothumility,stilllessdiscouragement,butrenewedconsciousnessthat“onenaturewroteandthesamereads.”SoitisintravelorinanyotherformofcontactwiththePast:wecannotderiveanyprofitorseeanynewthingexceptwerememberthat“theworldisnothing,themanisall.”SimilararetheusesofSociety.MoreclearlythaninNatureorinthePast,weseeincertainotherpeoplesuchlikenesstoourselves,andreceivefromtheperceptionofthatlikenesssuchinspiration,thatarealfriend“maywellbereckonedthemasterpieceofnature.”YetelsewhereEmersonhasmorethanonceurgedusnottobe“toomuchacquainted”:allourparticipationinthelifeofourfellows,thoughrichwithcourtesyandsympathy,mustbefreefrombendingandcopying.WemustusethefellowshipofSocietytofreshen,andnevertoobscure,“therecollectionofthegrandeurofourdestiny.”
